If you have spent time on our website or browsing our Instagram, you will find our ‘slogan’ / ‘mission statement’: “Propagate Passion”. Maybe when you read it you already have an idea of what it means to you but let me explain a little bit about what it means to me!
I think the best way for me to start would be to talk just a little bit first about propagation and what it means in the more common use of propagating plants. According to Wikipedia - “Plant propagation is the process by which new plants grow from a variety of sources: seeds, cuttings, and other plant parts.” Basically, what that means is by growing one plant you can then take from that plant to create completely new plants. So, by creating one thriving plant you can create multiple thriving plants and continue to propagate more and more plants. Simply by the act of caring for one thing well you are creating the ability to multiply that gift without ever damaging the original plant or taking away from its ability to continue to grow.
Now let’s just quickly touch on passion as I think there are often other actions and emotions that are confused as passion. Miriam Webster defines passion as - a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept / an intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction. I think these two definitions sum up how I see passion very well, but if I had to sum up passion myself in one simple equation it would be this. Action within your Passion = Joy and Fulfillment. Passion is what makes things exciting, it gives us desire and drive and without it life would be pretty bland. It is a force and feeling that is hard to measure and often hard to explain but when you live with passion it is unmistakable to you and others around you. Passion is also like a plant in the sense that if you ignore it the passion will die but if you nurture and care for it, it will continue to grow and thrive!
So how do you go about propagating passion? These simple steps below should help!
Step 1: Nurture your passions! The only way that propagation works is when you have a healthy plant that is putting out new growth, or else you are just slowly killing the parent plant. The same goes for people and passions, if you are not nurturing your passion and helping it grow you cannot share that passion without killing yours. This is really the biggest part of the process and just by this simple act you are encouraging people to nurture their own passions and already propagating passion in others!
Step 2: Share your passions! One of the most fun parts of propagating plants is sharing the new plants with friends and other plant lovers. The same goes for passion, you don’t need to like the same thing to share your passion with others, just by showing your passion for something it can encourage someone to also embrace something they are passionate about. It is a lot easier to talk about things that excite you if other people around you are having the same conversation. So don’t be scared to share and talk about what you are passionate about even if you think it weird, the world needs more people living and acting in their passions.
Step 3: Help others nurture their passions! This is where you shift from being an example to being a guide and a mentor. Leaning into a passion can often be hard as it can mean changing routines and habits, so when you have a friend or someone around you who is working on nurturing their passions let them know you are there for them! Discuss their passions with them even if it’s not something that is of interest to you, the benefits of helping nurture their passion is that they will automatically help nurture your passions back. Passion is contagious so the more of it that exists around you the more it will continue to multiply in your circles and communities.
So, live with passion, share your passion and help nurture other people’s passions and the world around you will change quicker than you may imagine. I will leave you with a quote from a very wise lady who I grew up watching with my mom.
"Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you." – Oprah Winfrey
