Hi all, it’s me again, Heather from @OurBarnesYard, and today I want to chat about how I incorporate tropical plants into the holiday season.

1. Holiday Decorating

The first thing I want to clear up, is the notion that you need to clear out all of your plants to make room from your holiday décor. While I do often shuffle plants around, I think that holiday decorating should reflect your own personal style and if you know me, plants are a huge part of that.

If you need to make room, tuck a few plants together in a group. Grouping plants together can actually be really helpful as it increases humidity through the long dry winter of the prairies.

If you do find you need to move a few plants to make room for your holiday décor, I recommend moving them to a room that has equal or higher sun exposure. The increased sunshine will help your plants continue to thrive despite being relocated for the time being. I usually move my extra plants to my en-suite bathroom and enjoy the bonus tropical vibes during the holiday months!

2. Holiday Plant Care

With the busyness of the holiday season picking up already this year, I wanted to share how I manage to squeeze plant care in as well. The advantage to this time of year is that plants require less frequent watering. With decreased sunlight, plants have less solar power to help them process water. I check on my plants about every 10-14 days through winter and water as needed.

I do continue to fertilize using Plant Vitamins Thrive however I decrease the frequency to once every 1-2 months. If you’re new to plant fertilizers, I recommend starting with a half strength dilution and working up from there!
